What the blog?

mirrorI’m Louise and I’ve been working at NCVO on ICT projects since December 2005.  I worked on the ICT Hub project until it ended on 31st March 2008 and now I’m working as NCVO’s ICT Development Officer.

I feel passionately that voluntary and community groups can do more by embracing technology where it’s appropriate to them so I hope to be able to use this blog to share news, best practice, ideas and anything else useful I come across.  I’m particularly excited about how organisations can use and benefit from web 2.0.

This blog is going to be a bit of journey for me as I learn how to use it to bring in different elements of web 2.0 technology, I hope people find it useful.

So what exactly is web 2.0 (or social media / new media)?

When the internet first started out, websites were very much about giving people information.  The flow was one way, from the person or organisation out, to the reader.  The future of the internet is interactive and that is where web 2.0 comes in.  It is essentially tools to allow a two way flow of information.  Some examples of web 2.0 technologies are blogs, wikis, pod casts, discussion forums, video sharing, photo sharing and tagging.

I’ll try to keep my mind focussed on the magic of ICT but I might start to slide into sixties records, samuel smith pubs, vegetarian cooking and Liverpool FC, apologies in advance!
